July 4
& 5, 2008
Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
"Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ
was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation:
But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see:
and they that have not heard shall understand." (Romans 15:20,21)
Friday,
July 4th: I went with my family to the park in Oxford, Wisconsin, near
where we live. At a pavilion there was an amateur country band playing
(pretty sad), and a few older folks dancing and drinking beer. There was a
baseball game, with a couple hundred spectators drinking beer. And there
was a carnival. The rides and the midway game trailers were truly
"vintage," to put it politely. There was hardly anyone there.
The people working the rides and midway seemed a bit lonely, and we gave
tracts to all of them. But the whole thing was strange, because there were
so few people. We passed out tracts to as many people as we could, but it
was a different kind of scene.
Saturday, July 5th: I was again in the Dells with
Evi and my two boys, David (13) and Jacob (7). Actually, he turned seven
on the tenth. They are both real troopers, and David gets into good
debates with people of all ages. We passed out hundreds and hundreds of
tracts this night. It was very crowded, as it was the holiday weekend. I
had a long conversation with a well-dressed young man named Aaron. When he
approached he stated that he was a skeptic, and that he believed that
human life was planted here by aliens. I asked him, "Where did the
aliens come from?" He said he didn't know. There was little debate
after that. I merely showed him from the scriptures that he was a sinner,
that he knew he was a sinner, that he was without excuse, and that there
were not many paths to God, but only one: the Lord Jesus. He had
been raised a Lutheran. He stayed and listened for about 15 minutes, which
was impressive. I truly do not believe he had ever heard the Gospel
presented plainly before. I am always amazed and awed, not at my own
abilities, but at the power of the Gospel, not only to save, but to
divide, infuriate, entice, interest, stumble and eventually, on judgment
day, hold accountable those who encounter it.
Four young Muslim men, who were dressed quite
worldly, with tight, hip, t-shirts, along with a woman who was undoubtedly
the mother of one or more of them (they were really just big boys) stopped
by and looked at the abortion sign. They wondered at my other sign also,
which lists Islam under "false hopes." I told them clearly that
there was only one way to be saved, and that it was through Jesus Christ.
I told them that those who say that Islam is a religion of peace have no
idea what they are saying. As the mother was trying to scoot them down the
sidewalk, I said, "Do you know who is really following the Koran?
It's the terrorists." They seemed to agree, and they weren't upset by
this. As they walked away I said, "Jesus set me free from my sins,
and he can give you new life also!" Funny that they weren't prepared,
or willing, to defend their faith.
Evi and David engaged many
people in conversations, too, and Jacob helped by holding signs, when he
wasn't crawling all over the benches. He's really patient for a
seven-year-old. One sign we are now using is a sign that says Hitler's
Holocaust, with a photo of stacked up dead prisoners in Germany, and
at the bottom it says America's
Holocaust, with a photo of an aborted baby. I added the word abortion
so that it now reads America's Abortion Holocaust, so that there is
no doubt that the photo is more than merely a photo of a dead baby. Also,
I added a banner to the sign in Spanish that states El Aborto Es
Asesinato, which means Abortion Is Murder.
We have noticed that many of those who stand staring at
the photos with their hands over their mouths are Spanish-speaking people,
especially women, so we now have some Spanish tracts to give out, but we
will need more. The abortion sign that we use on the sidewalk is an
attention-getter, and we do get a bit of resistance and condemnation. Some
will say loudly that we don't have a right to have that photo out there. I
always point and ask them why they are not worried about the filth in the
t-shirt shop behind them. Some will shield their kids' faces as they go
by, but do not shield those same faces when they pass the shop with the
filthy t-shirts. It's not that they are really shocked, but that they feel
guilty, either because they have had abortions and have vowed never to
admit their guilt, or because they are complicit in murder by tolerating
this tragedy in American history. Their apathy makes them ashamed, for
they are truly without excuse.
This sign was designed to
be read quickly, with large letters, however, since we are now using it on
the street where people walk by, I have added other things to it. There is
a photo of my daughter Stephanie's hands holding our little one, Daniel,
who was miscarried a couple years back at four months. When skeptics yell,
"That's not a baby! It was probably done in PhotoShop!" I just
point and say, "There's my son, Daniel." At the top are two more
postcard-sized
photos of abortions, and one has a detailed explanation next to it. That's
what the man is reading in the photo above on the right. On the bottom is
a sign which says, "4000 Babies Murdered Every Day. Why Should God
Bless America?" Just after 9/11, lawn
signs saying "God Bless America" began popping up all over
America. Yeah, right! We tolerate the most evil practices in this country,
and yet hold our hands over our hearts while everyone sings God Bless
America as the flag is paraded by. And yet, few let their representatives
know what they think about this genocide. There is just too much fun to be
had, and too many cool programs on TV. "Sorry... I just don't have
the time to call my senator!" Sure, some may pray that abortion is
ended, but there is no action. Jesus said, "Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these,
you did it not to me." Be warmed and filled! The hearts of Americans need to be made
ashamed before anything will change. And that will come from preaching the
truth. We use these signs to make people stop and listen, to take some
literature, to shake them up, to shock them, to shame them, to make them
think outside of their little entertainment boxes. And Christians aren't
much better. They come up to us and try to tell us that we're doing it all
wrong, when they are doing nothing but walking up and down Broadway in the
Dells looking for thrills. I tell them, "I like the way I'm doing it
better than they way you're not doing it."
Come join us if God moves on your heart. You can move
into it slowly, by just handing out some tracts and not saying much. Or,
don't hand out tracts... just come and listen, and learn. Thank you for
all your help and prayers.
